A composite paddle about 20 cm wide and 40 cm long, weighing between 200 and 300 grams. A perforated plastic ball about 7.4 cm in diameter weighing between 22 and 26g. A low net like in tennis, 86 cm high at the centre and 91 cm at the posts. A court the size of a badminton court (13.40x6.10m).
In a rally, one partner on a team starts serving and keeps the serve as long as the team scores points. When the first server loses the serve, it's the partner's turn to serve from where they stand, until the team commits a fault and the serve passes to the opposing team. At service changes and at the start of the match, the first serve is always from the right. Points are scored only by the serving team. A game is played to 11 or 15 points.
Only one serve is allowed, performed behind the baseline, underhand and below the waist, cross-court starting from right to left. The server can also drop the ball from their hand and serve after the bounce if they wish.
Unique to pickleball, there is a non-volley zone 2.13 m on each side of the net, where volleys and smashes are not allowed. Players can enter the zone at any time and play balls, as long as they have bounced on their side of the net first.
